Crios Malbec 2006, Mendoza, at Majestic Wine Warehouses
Made by husband and wife team, Pedro and Susana Balbo, whose passion and experience in winemaking is evident in their distinctive, high quality wines. A rich purple, ruby colour, the nose shows a mix of fresh cherries and toasty, smoky oak, which follow on to the full bodied palate. Fruity and spicy on the finish, with plenty of firm tannins giving the wine structure, this is an ideal partner to richly flavoured meat dishes.

Rioja Reserva 2001, Marqués de la Concordia, at Majestic Wine Warehouse
2001 was an exceptionally good vintage in Rioja. Drought in the previous year meant reduced yields, resulting in incredibly intense fruit flavours in the grapes. This Reserva shows complex aromas of ripe fruit, cedar and spice, which develop into a smooth, velvety palate with powerful dark fruit flavours, hints of coffee and an almost chocolatety richness. Excellent with lamb.

Sancerre 2005, Château de Sancerre, at Majestic Wine
This fabulous property is run by Marnier-Lapostolle, owners of Casa Lapostolle in Chile. Their vineyards are much sought after with flinty South-East facing slopes, and old vines. Piercingly concentrated and aromatic fruit, overlaid with a fine mineral complexity, this is one of the finest wines of Sancerre.

Rioja Reserva Imperial 2000, CVNE, at Majestic Wine Warehouses
Fine garnet colour with a faintly terracotta rim. Exemplary vanilla nose, quite austere but with sloes, mulberries and spice behind. Well cooked curranty fruit on the palate, dry and elegant with great fruitcake richness and a fine long finish.

Marc Ducournau Grand Heron 2006, Vin de Pays des Côtes de Gascogne, at Majestic Wine Warehouse
The Gascony region is perhaps France's best value white wine region producing whites with refreshingly grassy and fruity aromatics. This is a mouthwatering example brimming with grapefruit. An invigorating apéritif.
